If walls could talk......... Circa 1906 - This Prairie Colonial home was built for Orlando’s 13th Mayor, Mahlon Gore. Having moved to Orlando in the late 1800s, the home was named "Sioux Villa" after Mayor Gore’s home in Sioux Falls, Iowa. Originally built on 4 blocks away with a view of the emerging downtown area, it was subjected to a controversial and challenging move in 1994 to save the home from demolition. New owners began restoration in 1996, and again in 2022.
Members of the Orlando Landmarks Defense organization breathed a sigh of relief when a generous offer of a beautiful Lake Copeland waterfront lot was anonymously made, providing a new address for this enduring piece of history. Even the address, 60 Waverly Place, evokes a sense of grandeur that deserves this home. While many hoped to acquire this home to preserve its significant history, every potential move proved challenging given its three-story height that would not fit under Interstate 408. In the end, the four-block
move to 60 Waverly Place was finally completed with limited impact on the home and decades-old trees along the route.
While saved as a historical treasure, this majestic home sits slightly outside the Delaney Historic District, allowing owners the opportunity to preserve and improve the home without design limitations that may otherwise have been imposed. Renovations have painstakingly
considered the home’s historical value while modernizing key areas for chic urban living. Original pine floors, detail paned windows, a lead
glass transom, a hidden stairwell, and ornate millwork still grace this home amidst its modern upgrades. And we can’t forget to mention the
~300-year-old beautiful oak tree that faithfully stands watch over Sioux Villa.
